My mom drove up this past week, and surprise d me with a dozen boxes of my dad’s books. My older brothers got his tools, but that’s ok. He and I and didn’t have a good relationship until near the end , but he loved reading and that was one of our points of connection.
I now have, in addition to some cool old Ford and John Deere manuals, the complete works of Zane Grey, Louis L’amour, and his set of the Everyman’s library.
My mom apologized that some of the books have grease stains from his lunch-break reading, but that’s exactly how I wanted them. Like many of us, I only appreciated the depth and complexity of this “uneducated” mechanic once he was gone.

We’ve got a pretty good L’Amour and Zane Gre
y collection going at my place. I need to take a plunge once I wrap up some more of my classic sci-fi binge (Doc Smith, etc.).

I’m thinking about reading all the Sackett books again, but that’s a huge time commitment!

I’m sorry for your loss as well. It is never easy.

Thanks. He did a great job of pushing everyone away, and was probably afraid people would find out that underneath it all he was an amazingly kind and generous person. Luckily we had time for me to grow up and for him to let go of his anger; I know not everyone gets those second chances.
